The increasing value of antique comics

The record breaking price for a comic book at auction on Feb. 24th was $167,300 for a first edition copy of Archie Comic #1.

Comic Books

Archie Andrews, the lovable red headed high school jock, might just be making his claim as being a comic celebrity fetching higher prices than both Spider man and the Hulk comics at auction.

February 24th, 2011, Heritage Auctions in Dallas Texas held a sale of Signature Vintage Comics and Comics Art Auction. A 1942 Archie Comics #1 brought in $167,300 (including 19% buyers premium) creating the world record for any comic at auction.

The whole auction realized a result of $4,270,483 with 1,262 lots sold. This auction was able to sell 99.6% of all the lots for sale which has become one of the highest percentages for Heritage Auctions’ history.

With other high valued comics like a copy of Marvel Comics #1 (Timely, 1939) and Fantastic Four #1 (Marvel, 1961) both selling in the range of close to $40,000 - $70,000, Archie can now truly be considered one of the greats.
