Stiles' World Cup winners medal sells for antiques valuation

His former club Manchester United have bought the item.

Sports Memorabilia

Former England footballer Nobby Stiles has seen his 1966 World Cup winners medal sell to his former club for its antiques valuation.

The item - awarded to the ex-Manchester United defender after the 4-2 victory over West Germany in the final of the showpiece at Wembley - was snapped up by the Red Devils for £188,200 after it was given a price guide of between £150,000 and £200,000.

The figure was a record for a football medal sold at auction.

In addition, Stiles had his European Cup winner's medal from the 1968 final against Benfica go under the hammer for £49,000.

United - who also purchased the latter - are planning to display their new World Cup acquisition in the club's museum.

Stiles, who suffered a stroke earlier this year, had previous said: "At this stage of my life I would rather have some control over the distribution of my memorabilia and know that my family will benefit."
