A rare book has been given an antique price guide of between £4 million and £6 million before it goes up for auction.

Birds of America, written by John James Audubon, has been called the world's most expensive tome and is set to go under the hammer along with a 1623 collection of Shakespeare plays, which are expected to fetch around £1 million.

The auction, run by Sotheby's, is taking place on December 7th in London.

David Goldthorpe, director and senior specialist in Sotheby's books and manuscripts department, described the auction as different to other book compilations.

He added: "The 50 lots coming from this magnificent collection are an example of what is known as high spot collecting - when a collector seeks out the very best across a range of fields."

This news comes after a book signed by Winston Churchill was expected to reach £2,000 when it goes under the hammer, the Bath Chronicle reported.
