Military sword fetches £10k at auction in the Cotswolds

People after antique silver may be interested in details of a recent auction.

AA collection of military treasures has been sold as part of are cent auction in the Cotswolds, in news that may intrigue those after antique silver. According to a piece in the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard,the Dominic Winters Book Auctions in South Cerney boasted 340 lots related to historic artifacts from the armed forces.

Among these was a Royal Presentation Sword given by the eventual Edward VII to General Sir Dighton Probyn, which bagged £10,000. Other items included letters from a First World War soldier and a photo album from a Nazi prisoner of war camp.

The latter fetched £5,800, far greater than its estimate of£300.

Chris Albury, the auctioneer, is quoted by the publication as stating: "The histories of these two wars unite the world - and the nearly-forgotten stories about our ancestors that these diaries,medals, autographs and other artifacts unlock are often amazing and humbling." At a recent auction in London, a telephone bidder secured the first ever Victoria Cross awarded to a British Army soldier.
