Lady Mairi Bury stamps have antiques valuation of £2.6m

An antiques valuation of £2.6 million has been placed on a collection of more than 2,000 stamps.

A collection of Lady Mairi Bury's stamps could fetch up to £2.6 million if an antiques valuation ends up being correct.

The items - which will go under the hammer from November 24th-26th at Sotheby's in London - make up more than 2,000 lots, but she did not necessarily want the most expensive pieces.

Richard Ashton, Sotheby's philatelic consultant, explained that the sale is unique because despite the aristocrat being able to afford the majority of stamps, she preferred to go for those that were of interest to her.

He added: "She was above all else a "collectors' collector" - buying an item of modest value, but of great interest, gave her the greatest pleasure."

Some of her compilations included pieces of the Falkland Islands, Cook Islands and Hong Kong.

This comes after a penny black stamp went under the hammer for £800 earlier this year, outdoing its antiques valuation of £500, the BBC reported.
