Gandhi Letter Gains High Value

A letter written by Gandhi achieves an estimate of £8,000-10,000 in an upcoming Bonhams sale at the end of March.

Mahatma Gandhi comes to market in the form of a letter written on 15th December, 1919. In London at Bonhams, March 29th will see the sale of this monumental letter which has been valued at £8,000-10,000.

This letter is one of the signifiers of Gandhi’s reform to bring peace to the unity of Hindus and Muslims. In the 1920s Gandhi started to communicate with the press and Congress more often through letters such as this. The letter could very well be either a copy of a letter Gandhi had already sent or a text in which the Tribune was going to publish the work. Because Gandhi kept a copy for his own records, states the importance of the letter.

Gandhi also concludes that the letter was published in the issue of the Tribune of 18 December 1919 included as well in the Collected Works of Mahatma.
