It has sold for $27,000 at auction.

A painting by the late London artist Paterson Ewen has gone under the hammer for $27,000 (£17,150), more than three times its previous antiques valuation.

According to the London Free Press, the piece - an untitled oil on canvas - was sold at an auction in Toronto on Tuesday (November 23rd).

David Silcox, president of Sotheby's Canada, said people's tastes are starting to change and individuals are becoming excited about contemporary art.

He added: "I'm particularly excited that the second section (contemporary art) of the sale was so animated. The energy in the room really lit up."

Overall, sales at the Royal Ontario Museum, where the Sotheby's auction was held, totaled $5 million with a JEH MacDonald canvas going under the hammer for $589 million.

This comes after a William Turner painting was given an antiques valuation of £500,000 before it goes under the hammer next month at a Christie's auction.
