Egyptian artefacts 'fail to achieve antique price guide'

A collector's six 2,000-year-old artefacts were valued at £10,000 but only two sold at auction last week.

A collection of six 2,000-year-old Egyptian artefacts given an antique price guide of £10,000 failed to achieve this at auction, when just two were sold for a total of £300.

Graham Allen had been planning to donate hundreds of pounds to the Staffordshire Hoard fund but after his relics' performance at the Derby-based sale last week he will have to reduce his cash pledge, the Staffordshire Newsletter reports.

"It's a bit disappointing to be honest. The only way I can explain it is that it wasn't the right audience at the auction," he remarked.

The lots included five amulets, one of which depicts the Egyptian goddess, Isis, with deity Horus, while another is of the god, Nefertem.

Similarly, the BBC recently reported that a Buddhist statue with an antique valuation of £40,000 did not meet its £20,000 reserve price and thus failed to sell, in spite of interest from London and China.
