Egyptian antique painting goes for record sum

An antique painting has been sold at a record price for a Middle Eastern artist's work.

Les Chadoufs was created in 1934 and depicts peasants at the River Nile - and has now set a record auction price for the work of a Middle Eastern artist.

The antique painting went under the hammer for $2.4 million (£1.57 million) in Dubai, despite being given an estimate of around $200,000.

The buyer's identity was not revealed and it was one of a collection being auctioned off by Mohammed Said Farsi, ex-mayor of Jeddah.

It is one of the pieces from Mahmud Said, who died in 1964. Another of his artworks at the Christie's sale earlier this week also helped boost the final total, reaching a price of $900,000.

Christie's said those bidding on items at the auction - another of which took place later in the week - were from the Middle East, US, Europe and Asia.

Next month, a sale at Sotheby's New York is set to see an Andy Warhol painting up for grabs.

According to the Guardian, the self-portrait was painted a year before the artist's death and is currently valued at up to £15million. It is owned by fashion designer Tom Ford.
