A Chinese vase has fetched £27,000 at auction, despite only having an antiques valuation of £400.

The item - an 11-and-a-half inch high blue and white vase with a six-character Jaijing mark - was written off as a reproduction product but it attracted interest from around the world when it was sold at Brigg, the Yorkshire Post reports.

The overall price is £27,600 with buyers' commission added on, but the owners were previously told in the early 1980s that it was just a 19th century copy.

A Chinese collector based in Edinburgh managed to win the vase by bidding on the telephone.

What's more, auctioneer Craig Bewick said there is an "absolutely incredible" market for Chinese antiques at the moment.

This comes after a Chinese vase found at a London house clearance went under the hammer for £43 million at auction last month.

Mr Bewick added: "In large part that is down to the fact that there are now many extremely affluent Chinese people both in mainland China and elsewhere around the world."
