A Buddhist statue failed to meet its antique price guide of £40,000 and has thus been left unsold.

According to Halls auctioneers in Shrewsbury, the item - which came from a private collection - attracted interest from China and London but could not meet its £20,000 reserve price, the BBC reports.

Jeremy Lamond, Halls art director, said he was still hopeful of selling the Avalokitesvara piece, which means "Lord who looks down".

It was only the third occasion in the last ten years that such a piece has gone under the hammer in the UK, he noted.

Mr Lamond previously told the news provider that the piece could have been made in China for a Tibetan official or in Tibet for a Chinese executive.

He added that the collection it came from was "of good provenance and [the figure] has two characters on the bottom, which means the coming of happiness".
