A book has beaten its antiques valuation to sell for more than £7 million, it has been reported.

According to Sotheby's, the price of £7,321,250, including the buyer's premium, paid for Birds Of America by John James Audubon was more than any other printed tome to date.

The item - which was purchased by London dealer Michael Tollemache at the auctioneers' in London yesterday (December 7th) - exceeded expectations as it was previously valued at between £4 million and £6 million.

What's more, Shakespeare's First Folio, which dates back to 1623, went under the hammer for £1,497,250 after it had attracted pre-sale estimates of up to £1.5 million.

David Goldthorpe, director of books and manuscripts at Sotheby's, recently said it was one of the most important illustrated tomes ever to have been created, NTDTV reported.

He added: "It's one of biggest books ever produced and one of the most spectacular."
