Handwritten lyrics penned by music legend Bob Dylan have gone under the hammer for $422,000 (£268,225), bettering their antiques valuation.

Original manuscripts for the track The Times They Are A-Changin - which formed by the title track to the 1964 album - were sold at Sotheby's in New York and had previously attracted a price guide of between $128,000 and $193,000.

According to BBC News, the winning bid was placed by hedge fund manager and art collector Adam Sender.

This comes after lyrics written by Beatles star John Lennon were given an antiques valuation of £350,000 before an auction at Bonhams in London on December 15th.

The Imagine singer's words to I'm Only Sleeping - which was on the group's 1966 album Revolver - appear on the back of an outstanding £12 bill.

Consultant for the auctioneers Stephen Maycock said it is possible to see the creative process Lennon took, by looking at the lyrical note.
