Sports Memorabilia

A Blackburn Rovers winners medal from 1928 is set to go under the hammer with an antiques valuation of up to £8,000.

The football memorabilia item - which dates back to the last time the club won the FA Cup - was presented to midfielder George Thornewell, who had helped Rovers overcome Huddersfield Town 3-1 in the final in front of 92,000 fans, the Blackburn Citizen reports.

It is set to be sold at Hanson Auctioneers and Charles Hanson said it is very rare to have such an item from the 1920s, adding it is in remarkable condition.

He stated: "We expect there to be a lot of interest. Mr Thornewell, who began his playing career for Derby County in 1919, was a staunch Derbyshire man and ran a pub in the county."

This comes after former Manchester United defender Nobby Stiles sold his England World Cup winners medal from 1966.
