A Barbie doll has sold for a figure at the lower end of its antiques valuation, but has still gone for a record price for a model of its kind.

The item - designed by Stefano Canturi - went under the hammer for $302,500 (£191,479) at Christie's in New York.

However, the Associated Press had earlier revealed that the piece had an estimated price of between $500,000 and $300,000.

An anonymous bidder purchased the Barbie, which was decked out in a strapless evening dress and a necklace featuring a one-carat pink diamond.

What's more, all the proceeds from the sale of the bejewelled figure will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Mr Canturi said there are more individuals finding investments that are differing from the usual, adding: "What's happening is going back to the basics like going back to beautiful gold, gems, something they can actually hold on to," the BBC reports.
