A $400,000 (£249,796) antiques valuation has been placed on a Batman comic.

The book, entitled Detective No. 27, features the first appearance of the caped crusader and only cost owner Robert Irwin ten cents.

Mr Irwin nearly sold the comic once when he was offered $27,000 for it by a comic shop, but he realised it must be worth a fair bit more.

It is thought that there are only 150 versions of the 1939 book remaining, despite a quarter of a million being printed.

A copy in super-mint condition once sold for more than $1 million, while another went under the hammer earlier this year to the tune of $575,000.

This comes after the BBC revealed that a World War I sketchbook and diary, which was used to note down what life was like during the trenches, sold for a combined fee of £9,600 at auction in September.
