Antiques valuation for car boot oil painting?

An oil painting purchased at a car boot sale for £1 may well have had an antiques valuation, as it has gone on to make £1,700 at auction.

The unframed work depicts a view of the Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius in the background, attributed to Italian artist Giuseppe Carelli, the Four Shires reports.

Additionally, a pair of vases found in a Banbury home went under the hammer at Holloway's Auctioneers and fetched £1,400, despite an antique price guide of between £80 to £120.

Made in Holland, the pots feature a leaf and floral pattern and attracted interest from both internet and telephone bidders.

Nick Willams of Holloway's remarked: "People appearing on the Antiques Roadshow are forever producing things from car boot sales that turn out to be worth many times what they paid for them."

To attest to that fact, a Chinese vase found in a London house clearance recently sold for £43 million at auction.
