Antique silver found in Agatha Christie trunk

An Agatha Christie fan bought a trunk belonging to the author for £100, only to find some long-lost treasure.

Silver & Metals

A trunk belonging to mystery novelist Agatha Christie that was bought at auction for £100 has been found to contain antique silver worth thousands. Fan of the author Jennifer Grant purchased the leather case but it remained locked for three years before she asked a friend to break into it, revealing a booty chest with jewels that have since been valued at a minimum of £20,000, the Sun reports.

Included in the strong-box found inside the chest were 50 gold coins, a diamond engagement ring and a buckle-shaped brooch and experts believe the haul could be worth five times the original estimate, given its Christie connection.

Ms Grant remarked: "The trunk was a talking point at dinner parties for years, but I thought nothing of it."

A similar event happened recently over in Co Laois, Ireland, when an unsuspecting seller at an auction in the country made £99,808 upon the sale of an antique ceramic vase - over 1,000 times higher than he had expected to receive.
