Those looking for accurate antique appraisals might be interested to note a wine bottle has smashed a record by selling for $304,375 (£191,090).

The Cheval Blanc 1947 item - which sold to an anonymous bidder - broke the milestone for the highest amount paid for a single bottle of wine, Christie's has announced.

Prior to the sale, Michael Ganne, wine specialist at the auctioneers, called the product one of the greatest Bordeaux of all time, adding: "Not only because of its rare quality but also due to its extensive life span, as it could still be kept and enjoyed 50 years from now with no problem at all".

He described the event as "exciting" for international collectors of the alcohol.

This comes after another foodstuff - a 16-pound ham - went under the hammer for more than £1 million at an auction in the US in the name of charity earlier this year.
