'WWI exploding dart' has antiques valuation of £1.2k

The item is the kind of weapon that would have been used to destroy German Zeppelins during the First World War.

An exploding dart, which may have been used during the First World War, has been given an antiques valuation of £1,200.

The item - which is similar to the ones used to take down German Zeppelins - is set to go up for auction next month.

It would be dropped on the German airship, which would then explode into flames as it contained flammable gas.

Auctioneer Steven Bosley said people had to be "extremely brave" to use the items.

He added: "We believe this one was used as an instructional aid. They did work and showed how quickly air warfare became part of the conflict."

What's more, other similar items to have recently been auctioned include unseen photos of Adolf Hitler, which were sold for around £30,000.

The images were taken by the Fuhrer's personal photographer Heinrich Hoffmann and went under the hammer at a sale in Northamptonshire last month.
