'Sweetest melon in the world' sold for £38k

One popular fruit has been sold for a high auction price.

A melon reckoned to be the sweetest in the world has been sold for £38,000 at auction.

It was picked up by a Chinese businessman called Yu Lin, reports The Sun.

At the annual melon festival in the Turpan, Xinjiang region of China, experts officially accredited the item as the sweetest in the world.

Lu Tan, a farmer who sold the melon and ordinarily earns £300 a month, was quoted by the publication as saying: "I will not be giving up my farm - but I plan to buy more land and next year have an even bigger and better melon to sell."

The fruit has a sugar content of 20.2g per 100g, which perhaps underlines its flavour some nature.

Such a sale may attract the attention of anyone on the lookout for antique appraisals.

Elsewhere, collectors may have noted that glamour icon Twiggy has donated a pink coat for an Alder Hey hospital fundraiser, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.
