The History of Patek Philippe

In 1839, Patek Philippe was founded as "Patek, Czapek & Cie." by co-founders Antoni Patek and Franciszek Czapek. By time, Adrien Philippe joined the team, and in 1851, the companies named included both "Patek" and "Philippe". They began manufacturing pocket watches and were innovative with a great sense of quality. The company was owned by its founders until 1932, during the Great Depression, when Charles Stern and Jean Stern bought the company. Patek Philippe has since been in the ownership of the Stern family, with Thierry Stern as the current President. Some of the notable milestones in Patek Philippe's history is the double chronograph patent in 1902; they produced the world's first lady's wristwatch with complication in 1916, and in 1996, they patented the annual calendar mechanism. And that's just three of many, many milestones.

How To Authenticate a Patek Philippe Watch

Like all luxury watches, the watch always comes with original documentation stating the serial number, production year, and other information about the watch. Patek Philippe isn’t an exception. However, when it comes to vintage watches, it’s normal that the watch is missing the original papers. It’s still fully possible to authenticate the watch without the paper. The most reliable way to authenticate a Patek is simply to take it to an official Patek Philippe retailer. A watchmaker will open the watch to see the inside and determine that everything is correct and in accordance with Patek’s high standards. Although forgers can fake a watch’s appearance, it’s impossible for them to fake the movement inside the watch, especially if it’s of such high quality such as Patek Philippe, and also Vacheron Constantin and Lange & Söhne.

Patek Philippe Watch Price

The value of a Patek Philippe varies a lot depending on several factors, including the model, condition, and rarity of the watch. However, looking at the higher end, we find watches for several million. Read below to find out about The most expensive Patek Philippe watches.

“You Never Actually Own a Patek Philippe”

Did you know that one of the most famous brand slogans belongs to Patek Philippe? In 1996, Patek began advertising a slogan that later became synonymous with the brand. The slogan, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe, You merely look after it for the next generation” is totally in line with Patek’s brand since it’s all about heritage and quality. A Patek Philippe isn’t fast fashion. It’s the complete contrast.

Most Popular Patek Philippe Watches

Patek Philippe Nautilus is by far the most popular Patek model. It has been made in several variations with ref. 5711, with the blue dial being the most sought-after model. 5990 and 5712 are also popular references. Besides the Nautilus, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut is a very popular choice if you're looking for a more casual and sports model. Contrary to that, a great dress watch is the Patek Philippe Calatrava. Lastly, it's important to mention the Patek Philippe ref. 2499, which is by many considered the greatest watch ever made. Both John Lennon and Eric Clapton owned ref. 2499.

Best Patek Philippe Watches For Investment

In general, like all watch brands, if you buy to invest, then you should always go for the most popular models, or the rarest models. A so-called “piece unique” is always a good choice. Then you’d have the only watch in the world of its kind. Valuewise, that’s superb! But to actually buy a piece unique is difficult as very few get that opportunity. Therefore the best alternative is to go for the most popular model, and that’s arguably the Patek Philippe Nautilus.

How To Check Patek Philippe Serial Number

The easiest and most reliable way to check the serial number of a Patek Philippe watch is simply to go to a Patek Philippe retailer. All official Patek Philippe retailers have complete data on Patek Philippe serial numbers, and they can very accurately tell you the year when the watch was produced by checking the serial number in their database. Another way is by doing an online search of Patek Philippe serial numbers. If you already know the serial number of the watch, then there are several sites online that can help you find information about the watch by typing in the serial number. This could, however, in some rare cases, be incorrect. Hence, the most reliable alternative is to talk with a Patek Philippe retailer.
