The History of Omega

Originally branded Louis Brandt & Fil, Omega was founded in 1848 by watchmaker Louis Brandt. After Brandt passed away in 1879, his sons took over the business and continued the legacy. In 1903, the company name changed to Louis Brandt et Frère-Omega Watch & Co., and although it later became known to the public as simply “Omega”, it wasn't until 1984 that the company officially changed the name to just Omega. During its long history, one of Omega’s highlights is the creation of the first minute repeater in 1892, which was a collaboration with Audemars Piguet. Today, many associate Omega with their grand collaborations with NASA and James Bond, to mention a few.

The NASA Collaboration – The Moon Watch

The Speedmaster is synonymous with being the first watch on the Moon. Prior to NASA’s attempt to land on the Moon, they tested various watch brands to see what models would be best suited for the Moon. Omega won, and in 1969 Buzz Aldrin wore an Omega Speedmaster on the Moon – the first watch on the Moon. Neil Armstong, who in fact was the first man on the Moon, kept his Speedmaster in the Lunar Module.

The James Bond Collaboration – The 007 Watch

Although James Bond originally wore Rolex, that changed in 1995. With Pierce Brosnan as 007, Omega entered the Bond film series with a wonderful Omega Seamaster. Since the debut in GoldenEye, Bond has been wearing Omega watches ever since.

How To Authenticate an Omega Watch

Like all luxury watches, an Omega watch always comes with original documentation stating the serial number, production year, and other information about the watch. However, when it comes to vintage watches, it’s normal that the watch is missing the original papers. It’s still fully possible to authenticate the watch without the paper. The most reliable way to authenticate an Omega is simply to take it to an official Omega retailer. A watchmaker will open the watch to see the inside and determine that everything is correct and in accordance with Omega’s high standards. Although forgers can fake a watch’s appearance, it’s impossible for them to fake the movement inside the watch, especially if it’s of such a well-regarded brand as Omega.

How To Get an Omega Watch Valued

Value My Stuff is an excellent alternative to value Omega watches. The valuation is completed by world-leading watch experts, and the valuation is always up-to-date with an international standard. To get your Omega watch valued, follow these simple steps.

Omega Watch Price

Omega is one of the most affordable luxury watch brands. Vintage and truly wonderful 1960’s Omega Seamaster’s can be found online for less than £1,000. The average prices for new Omega watches are £4,000 to £7,500. At the high point, there are new models well over £50,000, but those are normally made of precious metals and are very limited.

The Most Expensive Omega Watch Ever Sold

Let’s begin with the most obvious. Buzz Aldrin’s Moon watch. If that watch would ever face the auction world, then the price would arguably be higher than ever before. Not only for Omega, but for all watch brands. It’s fair to say that the world’s most valuable watch is Buzz Aldrin’s Speedmaster. But since that watch is technically a property of the U.S. Government, it will never be sold.

The most expensive Omega watch ever sold went for a whopping £3.4 million! It was a 1957 Omega Speedmaster, ref. 2915-1, that Phillips sold in 2019 for a record price. The watch was in pristine condition, and although many expected it to sell in the millions, not many could ever imagine the high hammer price.

Another notable Omega watch that sold at auction was the Omega time-only watch that was personally owned bY Elvis Presley. The watch, retailed by Tiffany & Co. sold for £1.8 million dollars in 2018.

Most Popular Omega Watches

The flagship product of Omega is the Speedmaster. And that’s not a surprise since it’s one of THE most iconic and well-known watch models in the world. Not many brands can brag about a Moon watch… Besides the Omega Speedmaster, the Seamaster is also very popular. Another popular, yet very new model is the Moonswatch, which is a collaboration between Omega and Swatch. As both brands are owned by the Swatch Group, the collaboration isn’t a surprise. The success, however, surprised us all. The Moonswatch comes in several variations, and all are highly demanded, mainly due to the low price.

Best Omega Watches For Investment

In general, like all watch brands, if you buy to invest, then you should always go for the most popular models, or the rarest models. Many Omega models are sold in limited numbers. It’s, therefore, possible to combine the most popular model – the Speedmaster – with the fact that it’s limited. One example is the so-called Omega Snoopy. Another good investment is vintage Speedmasters, most notably before 1970.
