The History of Audemars Piguet

Founded in the year of 1881 by the two childhood friends Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet. The two Le Brassus-born boys were separated in their youth but were later reconnected, and together created what was later established as one of the world’s finest watch brands. Their partnership was brilliant. Although both were watchmakers, they divided the responsibilities so that Mr. Audemars handled the production of the watches while Mr. Piguet handled the company's management. Looking at the history of AP, there are many notable milestones. Or how about the creation of the minute repeater in 1892? Or the creation of the first-ever jumping-hour wristwatch in 1921? The list goes on. One thing we can settle on is that AP is arguably one of the most important watch brands of all time.

How To Authenticate an Audemars Piguet Watch

Like all luxury watches, the watch always comes with original documentation stating the serial number, production year, and other information about the watch. Audemars Piguet isn’t an exception. However, when it comes to vintage watches, it’s expected that the watch is missing the original papers. It’s still fully possible to authenticate the watch without the paper. The most reliable way to authenticate an AP is simply to take it to an official Audemars Piguet retailer. A watchmaker will open the watch to see the inside and determine that everything is correct and in accordance with AP’s high standards. Although forgers can fake a watch’s appearance, it’s impossible for them to fake the movement inside the watch, especially if it’s of such high quality as Audemars Piguet. The same could be said for Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, and Lange & Söhne.

Audemars Piguet Watch Price

The value of an Audemars Piguet varies a lot depending on several factors, including the model, condition, and rarity of the watch. In general, AP watches have high prices compared to other watch brands. Looking at the lower end, there are many pre-owned vintage Audemars Piguet watches in the £4,000 to £8,000 range. However, looking at the higher end, we find watches for several million. Read below to find out about The most expensive Audemars Piguet watch.

The Most Expensive Audemars Piguet Watch

In 2021, during Christie’s “Only Watch” auction, the auction record for any Audemars Piguet watch was set when the unique extra thin “Jumbo” Royal Oak sold for a whopping 3,100,000 CHF, close to 3.4 million pounds. On the second place, we find yet another Royal Oak. What’s interesting about this 2.1 million pounds watch is that it was Gerald Genta’s personal watch. Genta is famous for being the designer of AP’s Royal Oak, Patek Philippe’s Nautilus, among others.

The Most Popular AP watch – The Royal Oak?

Yes! The Royal Oak was introduced in 1972. During that time, the high-end watch brands were in a very struggling situation since quartz watches became popular and overtook the watch industry very fast. Almost all high-end watch brands began selling their watches for lower prices, but not AP. When they introduced the Royal Oak, the price for the steel sports watch was higher than gold watches by their competitors. And perhaps not surprisingly, the Royal Oak wasn’t a success when it was released, mainly due to the price. But as time went on, the popularity of the Royal Oak slowly grew, and today, it’s probably the world’s most popular watch, together with the Rolex Daytona.

Other Audemars Piguet models are Royal Oak Offshore, Millenary, Jules Audemars, Haute Joaillerie, Classique, and the newest edition to the family: Code 11.59. The Code 11:59 launched in 2019 and was met with very bad reviews, but AP has developed the model over the last four years, and the critics have begun to appreciate the watch, which also reflects in the sales of the Code 11.59, which has gone up a lot since 2019.

Best Audemars Piguet Watches For Investment

The short answer is Royal Oak. It’s one of the world’s most popular watch models, and its value has increased over time. Highly complicated AP’s have also shown to be a great investment, but those are often very, very expensive. A more inexpensive alternative is vintage AP’s. They will not lose value over time but rather increase in value. Pretty much the only thing that would make a vintage 1960’s AP lose value is if the watch were damaged and the condition would get worse than when you bought it.

How To Check Audemars Piguet Serial Number

The easiest and most reliable way to check the serial number of an Audemars Piguet watch is simply to go to an Audemars Piguet retailer. All official Audemars Piguet retailers have complete data on Audemars Piguet serial numbers, and they can very accurately tell you the year when the watch was produced by checking the serial number in their database. Another way is by doing an online search of Audemars Piguet serial numbers. If you already know the serial number of the watch, then there are several sites online that can help you find information about the watch by typing in the serial number. This could, however, in some rare cases, be incorrect. Hence, the most reliable alternative is to talk with an Audemars Piguet retailer.
