Bonhams will be holding their 19th Century Paintings Sale on July 13th. Included in the sale is a watercolor by J.M.W. Turner that is estimated at £120,000-180,000. The picture shows a scene of the Oyster Bed at Whitstable, Kent.

This is one of 40 that Turner created of the Sothern Coast of England for W.B. Cooke’s folio of engravings. The piece was completed in 1824 and originally published in 1826. The town in 1793 became the national capital for oyster fishing and is still hope to the Whitstable Oyster Fisheries Company.

This picture is a fine example of Turner’s classic play with light as well as a lovely seaside scene. Along with this piece there will also be Turner’s painting of St. Mary’s Church, Dover included in the sale estimated at £12,000-18,000.
