A collection of medals awarded to a soldier who served in the Second Boer War has been given an antique price guide of £4,000.

Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Lawrence - who led the South Wales Borderers 24th regiment, famous for its heroic defence of Rorke's Drift, between 1896 and 1902 - was given a Distinguished Service Order and a Queen's South Africa Medal among other accolades, Wales Online reports.

The items are set to go under the hammer at Dreweatts in Bristol and Malcolm Claridge, medals and militaria specialist at the auctioneers, said Mr Lawrence's job was to reinstate and defend railway targets and engines.

Mr Claridge added that the Boers would be "disrupting communications" by blowing these facilities.

This news comes as former England international footballer Nobby Stiles puts his 1966 World Cup winner's medal up for auction today (October 27th).

The item is expected to fetch up to £150,000.
