A collection of pieces from captain Robert Falcon Scott's expedition to the South Pole has exceeded its antique price guide.

The array of items sold for more than £400,000, according to Herald Scotland, but it was revealed yesterday (September 22nd) that they had been valued at between £150,000 and £200,000.

The highest sale was for professional photographs of the Antarctic, believed to be the first, which went under the hammer for £169,250, the news provider added.

A Union Jack made from silk, which Scott had taken on an expedition in 1901, was bought for £73,250 at the Christie's auction and a journal - dating from November 29th 1910 to January 8th 1912 - that told the story of the trip fetched £46,850.

Moreover, Scott died, along with four other companions, while on the journey back from the South Pole in 1912, although upon discovering the landmark he realized that Norwegian explore Roald Amundsen had reached the destination around a month earlier.
