Champagne

he auction house Acker Merrall & Condit will be holding an auction in June in Finland. The auction will include two 200 year old bottles of champagne what were found in a 19th century shipwreck in the Baltic Sea. They are estimated to go for about 500,000 Swedish krona ($82,000).

The big test was to find if these bottles were even drinkable. After analyzing the bottles and corks, experts have estimated that the bottles were hand-blown between 1811 and 1831. Usually with bottles this old the liquid inside has turned sour but experts have sampled the taste of these bottles and the flavors are still intact and drinkable. “Wine experts suggest the Baltic’s steady 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) temperature, the darkness and lying undisturbed 150 feet under water helped in the wine aging process.”
