Julien's Auctions has hosted a sale of Star Trek rarities that saw a parka jacket worn by actor Leonard Nimoy sell for $8,960 (£5,980).

The item was used in the 2009 film of the famous series and adorned Mr Spock, Paul Fraser Collectibles reports.

News of the purchase may capture the imagination of those looking to fetch a high pop and film memorabilia price.

The publication notes that Nimoy's appearance in the flick was likely to be his last ever Star Trek showing, which may underline the potential value of the garment in the long-term.

Furthermore, the piece was previously given an estimate of between $5,000 and $7,500.

The article also claimed Star Trek memorabilia purchased at the auction house "will continue to grow in value as the franchise's success continues".

Collectors may also be aware that a Tardis used in the Doctor Who television series was recently put up for sale by Bonhams with an expected selling price of as much as £12,000.
