Ham achieves antique valuation of $1.6m

A ham has been sold at auction for an antique valuation of $1.6 million.

A 16-pound ham has gone under the hammer for an antique valuation of $1.6 million (£1.03 million).

The price, which amounts to $100,000 per pound, was paid by two Louisville businessmen at the 47th annual Kentucky Farm Bureau Country Ham Breakfast charity auction.

Bernard Trager, chairman of Republic Bank and Trust, and Dr Mark Lynn & Associates, owner of Dr Bizer's Vision World, were responsible for stumping up the huge antique valuation for the piece of meat.

Both paid $800,000 each for the pork and Mr Lynn said: "I thought why not? It's for charity and everybody wins that way."

The charity has now helped to raise $5.6 million for local aid organisations, as well as educational and philanthropic groups.

Antique valuation seekers may have also been stunned to see that a toilet - once owned by author J.D Salinger - was put up for sale with an asking price of $1 million earlier this month.
