Giant toad sculptures 'exceed antique price guide expectations'

The £60,000 sale of giant fibreglass toad sculptures has exceeded expectations, according to reports.

Sculpture

Giant fibreglass toad sculptures have gone under the hammer for £60,000, exceeding previous antique price guide expectations, it has been reported.

There were 40 of the items, which each stood 1m tall and had been decorating the streets of Hull for three months.

They were designed by local artists to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of poet Phillip Larkin - who wrote The Less Deceived and The Whitsun Weddings - and inspiration was taken from two of his poems, Toads and Toads Revisited.

Larkin With Toads project manager Clare Huby told the Yorkshire Post that the whole process was a great success.

She added: "It's a fantastic example of how local businesses and local people can get behind something and make it work."

But before the project, Hull City Council was forced to withdraw funding after a public outcry about the amount it was going to pay for the animals.
