Gauguin painting 'does not make antiques valuation'

The piece had an antiques valuation of £10 million.

A Paul Gauguin painting has failed to make its antiques valuation after it was not sold at auction.

The item - which was given a pre-sale estimate of £10 million - had been put up for sale at a London auction after going on display for the first time in 15 years.

Nature Morte A L'Esperance, which was created by the French impressionist artist in 1902, did not reach its reserve price as it appeared at Christie's.

But other pieces did go under the hammer as the auction made more than £60 million with Pierre Bonnard's Terrasse a Vernon fetching £7.2 million.

This comes after a painting by Frank Duveneck exceeded its antiques valuation to sell for $42,300 (£26,355) earlier this week.

The piece - entitled Portrait of a Young Girl - had a pre-sale estimate of up to $15,000 before it went under the hammer at Cowan's, the Examiner reported.
