Anyone keen to get the most accurate book valuations might have noted that Sotheby's is planning to put a series of first editions up for grabs in London.

The sale features gems such as William Shakespeare's collected poems and James Joyce's Ulysses and could generate up to £15 million.

"Every book is a knockout," said Peter Selley, a literature specialist at the auction house. "It takes your breath away."

What's more, a signed copy of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol will be among the rare items going under the hammer.

An original copy of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein will also comprise part of the sale.

As such, literature lovers might want to rummage through their attics to see whether they too have any books that could be subject to an online valuation.

Meanwhile, fans of the Tintin comic books might be aware that approximately 200 items related to the cartoon hero have been sold in Paris for about ?1 million (£847,000).
