A letter autographed by Gandhi has sold for more than double its antiques valuation after going under the hammer.

It was auctioned at a Bonhams sale of Fine Books and Manuscripts on Sunday in California for $15,860 (£9,886), the Hindu reports.

The item - which was dated October 3rd 1933 - was addressed to an unnamed correspondent and features the ideological Indian leader discussing his thoughts on the Catholic faith and religions around the world in general.

In the letter, Gandhi stated: "I have some very good friends among Roman Catholics and I have read some literature about the Roman Catholic belief."

What's more, the item also reveals Gandhi believed people can fully grow in their own inherited faith.

This comes after the Guardian noted last month a letter written by John Keats in 1820 - around the time that he was dying from tuberculosis - had an antiques valuation of £120,000.
