Antique price guide of £200k for first edition of A Christmas Carol

An antique price guide of £200,000 has been placed on a first edition Charles Dickens tale.

A first edition of Charles Dickens's novel A Christmas Carol has been given an antique price guide of £200,000.

The 19th century item - which is set to go under the hammer at Sotheby's in London - was given to William Macready by the author, This is Gloucestershire reports.

The writer signed the book: "WC Macready, from his affectionate friend, Charles Dickens, New Year's Day, 1844."

According to the publication, Mr Macready lived in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire from 1793 to 1873 and was one of Dickens's greatest friends.

In addition, a spokesman for the auctioneers pointed out that the original A Christmas Carol was published on December 19th 1843, but the writer began signing copies for friends two days earlier.

Last month, another rare tome - Birds of America, written by John James Audubon - was handed an antique price guide of between £4 million and £6 million before going up for auction.
