Antique appraisals seekers might be keen to hear 1914 England cap has been sold

It is set to go on display at Burnley Football Club.

Sports Memorabilia

Those looking for accurate antique appraisals might be interested to note an England cap awarded to a former Burnley player has gone under the hammer.

The headgear, which was won by former Clarets winger Edwin Mosscrop when he made an appearance for his national side, was snapped up by the club's historian Ray Simpson, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.

Mr Simpson is keen to create a display of old mementoes from the club at their Turf Moor stadium and paid between £3,000 and £4,000 for an array of items in an auction of football memorabilia at Bonham's in Chester.

What's more, Mr Simpson pointed out the cap was not the only piece of memorabilia associated with the ex-Burnley star.

He added: "There was a winners medal and a shirt from the FA Cup final, but we had resigned ourselves to the fact that they were going to be sold for a serious amount of money."

This comes after former England international Nobby Stiles sold his World Cup winners medal at auction last year.
