In 2005, through an eBay listing, a Japanese collector bought a pair of Levi's 501 jeans dating from 1890 for $60,000. They were the earliest pair of Levi's to ever appear at auction, being made less then 20 years after Levi Strauss & Co. began producing denim overalls in the 1872. The innovation which led to the success of Levi Strauss & Co. was the use of copper rivets to strengthen the pockets. The 501 design is still in production today and Levi's are arguably the most iconic jeans manufacturers of all time. Either the collector wanted a piece of one of the world's most famous company's history, or maybe he just really enjoys worn in denim but either way it seems a fantastic sum to pay for a pair of jeans that today retail for under £50.
