Jewellery appeals to a considerable cross-section of society, and one does not have to be a jewellery or gem expert to appreciate beautiful pieces. Pieces vary from antiques owned by royalty to 20th-century designs iconic of their era. Jewellery designers such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari and Harry Winston often demand astonishing prices with such pieces made from a variety of materials and gems such as diamonds, colored gemstones, and natural pearls. Jewellery can often be representative of its’ owners and eras and most often are a symbol of status and personality. It is always good to have your jewellery valued. The value of precious stones and metals are steadily growing, so it is possible that your diamond engagement ring is worth more than when you got it!

Antique Jewellery Valuation

Did you inherit earrings or a necklace from your great grandmother? Maybe you found an Art deco bangle in an antique store? It is always good to check your historical jewellery valued by a professional. Sometimes the historical jewellery lacks the hall marks or any markings on the precious metals or it is not clear which stones are set in the earrings, pendants and necklaces. The first synthetic gemstones were produced as early as 1800 and although they were primarily used in early electrical devices, they were quickly popularised in the jewellery industry. So it is very possible that there are lab grown diamonds, sapphires and rubies set in your empire, regency, victorian, art nouveau or art deco jewellery.  A licensed and experienced gemologist will be able to not only tell you more about style features and precious stone cut  of your historical jewellery but also about the materials used in your piece and their current value.

Modern and Vintage Jewellery Valuation

Vintage and modern jewellery is usually well marked when it comes to carats of precious metals and stones used in your piece. Many of the vintage pieces from the 1930's-1940's featured pearls and it is always good to know if they are natural or cultured. Although cultured (man grown) pearls are very beautiful and it is possible to influence their shape, colour and size during the process, it is rare, natural pearls that will alway bring more value to your jewellery.

Modern jewellery industry also introduced many new cuts to shape precious stones and make most of the light reflecting through the stone, such as princess cut (popular today for diamond rings) or concave cut in which facets are curved and scatter more light into the interior of the stone than traditional flat facets.

Artists’ Jewellery Valuation

Many well known Artist such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder or Niki de Saint-Phalle made small batches of jewellery, mostly for their closest circle of family and friends. These are often very intimate pieces that were made for a specific person, and are treated more as small works of art rather than the usual jewellery to wear everyday or even during a fine evening. Those pieces, even if the artist did not use very precious materials to make them, such as diamonds or precious metals, are often worth more than usual jewellery. If you collect or inherited a piece of artist’s jewelery it is time to check what you got and submit it for a online valuation with one of our experts!

Diamonds and Precious Stones Valuation

It gets more popular to buy and invest in gemstones that are not set in jewellery as market prices were steadily moving upwards only in the recent years. Gemstones are also popular because of their rarity and limited availability as a natural resource and growing high demand. Global gemstone market is said to be worth USD 53.2 million by 2022-2029 at a 6.53% growth rate.

Let’s take a look at the number one question we hear from clients at Value My Stuff

“How much is my jewellery worth?”

There are a multitude of factors involved in this simple question, and knowing that  “HW” does not stand for Hans Wilsdorf (the founder of Rolex), but rather is the makers mark for Harry Winston (1896-1978), one of the most respected names in the jewellery business since the opening of his NYC storefront back in 1932, is one of the many ways we can determine the value of your precious jewellery.
