Yuan Dynasty jar exceeds antiques valuation to sell for £2.6m

The "rare and magnificent" jar went for more than six times its pre-sale estimation.

A Sotheby's sale has just seen a Yuan Dynasty blue and white peony jar exceed its antiques valuation to sell for £2.6 million - more than six times its pre-auction estimation.

Put under the hammer yesterday (November 10th), the lot generated much interest and a bidding war between four interested hopefuls ensued before finally being sold to an anonymous telephone buyer.

It formed part of the auction house's biannual sale of fine Chinese ceramics and works of art - which, in total, made over £14 million.

Robert Bradlow of the organisation said: "We are delighted with the results of today's sale, which attracted an extraordinary amount of interest from our clients worldwide, many of whom travelled to London to bid from the saleroom."

This comes after £9,500 was paid for a porcelain lavatory used by John Lennon when he lived at Tittenshurst Park in Berkshire between 1969 and 1972.
