A prototype of the Queen Mother's wedding dress has beaten its antiques valuation to sell for £3,500.

The item - which had a pre-sale estimate of between £500 and £700 - went under the hammer in Bristol yesterday (February 2nd), the BBC reports.

Malcolm Claridge, valuer at Dreweatts' Apsley Road site, stated the garment did not really seem like a royal wedding dress as it was "very slight".

He added: "Although the workmanship is beautiful, it's very much a 1920s flapper style and at the time considered to be very unflattering dress."

But Mr Caridge stated it looks "very current" after it was recently modelled by a worker for the auction house.

What's more, he pointed out it was the ideal time for the item to be sold with Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding creating plenty of media attention, as well as the recent film The King's Speech, which stars Colin Firth.

Firth has won the Best Actor accolade at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild awards this year for his performance in the motion picture.
