One of the first ever Oor Wullie annuals has been bought for almost £1,000 at auction, despite being purchased for 20 pence originally.

Eddie McVey, who showed the item to specialist advisers, was made aware of its value by experts at Bonhams auction house in Edinburgh.

It was eventually sold as part of the Scottish Sale of Art organised by the group and is thought to be one of only a few versions in existence.

A Bonhams spokesperson was quoted by The Courier as stating: "To buy an item for 20p and sell it on for £1000 is a fantastic return and goes to show there can be real value found in the unlikeliest of places."

The representative added that it is uplifting to see a high value accrued for a piece that was discovered by chance.

As a vibrant cultural destination with a long heritage, the Scottish capital could be an ideal place to secure accurate antique valuations.
