A gold locket from 1916 has gone under the hammer for more than double its antiques valuation.

The item - which honoured Guy Vickery Pinfield, a solider killed in Dublin during the Easter Rising - was sold for £850, more than its pre-sale estimate of £400, the Irish Times reports.

It was described by Sworders Auctioneers as an "incredibly poignant" piece and was purchased via a telephone bid by an unnamed private Irish collector on behalf of James O'Halloran of Adam's fine art auctioneers in Dublin.

Mr Pinfield was assigned to Ireland's current capital city on the first day of the battle on Easter Monday, April 24th, 1916, at the age of just 21.

This comes after it was revealed earlier this week, a dart, similar to those that may have been used to blow up German Zeppelins, is set to go up for auction in March with an antiques valuation of £1,200.
