A bronze Roman helmet found with a metal detector has been given an antique price guide of £300,000.

The item - used to wow spectators rather than in battle - was discovered in the village of Crosby Garrett in Cumbria.

It is set to go under the hammer at Christie's on October 7th and Georgiana Aitken, of the auctioneers, said she could scarcely believe her eyes when she first saw the artefact.

According to the Guardian, it is the best helmet found in Britain in more than a century and one expert has even given it an antique price guide of £500,000 or more.

And the publication noted that the man who recovered the item first thought it was a Victorian ornament.

This news comes after a helmet worn by Top Gear's the Stig is also set to go up for auction - on October 20th - with an estimated value of £1,200.
