In London on 5 April 2011, a collection of close to 30,000 toy soldiers is to be sold at Bonhams. The collection has been accumulated over the ages by Dutch collector Gijs Scholtens.
The collection started in 1993 when Scholtens visited the famous London toy store Hamley’s with his daughter. There he bought the first series containing 8,800 British soldiers and from there, everything escalated to the appearance at fairs and collectors’ markets.
Many of the highlights include Britain’s Infantry of the Line on Guard estimated at £200 – 300, Britain’s General Staff estimated also at £200 – 300, and Britain’s Medal Model Mounted Household Cavalry estimated to fetch between £300 – 400.
