Those looking for accurate antique appraisals might be interested to note a Titian painting has gone under the hammer for more than $16.8 million (£10.57 million).

The item - entitled A Sacra Conversazione: The Madonna and Child with Saints Luke and Catherine of Alexandria - was sold at Sotheby's in New York yesterday (January 27th).

And the piece set a record for the sale of such work by the artist, which was previously $13.6 million.

What's more, a spokesperson for the auction house pointed out it was one of the most important Titian pieces to go under the hammer in decades, adding: "A Sacra Conversazione' is one of only a handful of multi-figured compositions by Titian that remain in private hands."

This comes after an Andy Warhol painting recently sold for more than $302,000 when it went up for auction at Christie's in New York earlier this month, beating its pre-sale estimate.
