In the collectibles world, toys are one of the most popular categories. Not only do they hold a nostalgia that can help boost their value, but a favourite toy is also something that can be carefully stored away for many years. The market for valuable toys is very strong and teddy bears are one of the most popular items amongst collectors, although other animals, such as monkeys and kittens, can also fetch high prices. Auction house Bonhams has sold a number of famous teddy bears, such as Mr Bean's teddy, and even bears that had belonged to Tony Blair, Margaret Thatcher and Prince Phillip. In recent years, several mourning bears made by Steiff in 1912 to commemorate the sinking of the Titanic have been sold. These black bears, of which only 600 were made, have received valuations of up to £300,000, depending on their condition.
Stars Wars was one of the first films to really take advantage of merchandising and as a result, there are a number of collectable toys to look for. An interesting article to this effect was published in This is money, 26 April 2005, “Investing in Star Wars toys and memorabilia". Items in their original packaging sell particularly well. On 25th November 2009, Action figure pack with Mini-Rig, German issue, “Die Kraft der Macht” sold for £1,900, against an estimate of £70-90. Packaging was still in excellent condition. Other Action figure packs achieved similar prices, ranging from £1,200 to £1,900.
Condition and rarity are the most important factors to consider when getting an antique toy appraised. Original packaging can also have a great impact on the toy's value - and if the toy has never been taken out of that packaging, the value can be quite surprising. Barbie, one of the most famous dolls in the world, was first sold in 1959 and the most valuable of these dolls is referred to as "Ponytail no 1". These are auctioned regularly and one in good condition can easily achieve a toy appraisal of £3,000. However, according to Toy Collectors Magazine, one of these dolls - which had never been removed from the box - sold for over £16,000 in 2006.
