Our Japanese Art Specialist

After graduating from Business College our Japanese art specialist joined Sotheby’s Japanese Art Department where he began a lifelong love and fascination for Far Eastern Art. He stayed there for ten years before managing a number of provincial auction houses outside of London. Later he returned to London as Director of Bonham's Oriental Art  Department. In the 90s he was head-hunted by a consortium of Singapore based businessmen who were setting up a group of auction houses across South East Asia and needed someone to recruit and train staff, organize the infrastructure of the business, devise marketing strategies and to oversee the running of the group. He moved to South East Asia where he spent many years traveling around the companies bases in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Manila. Returning to the UK in 2002 he consulted on Japanese Art with two major English museums and advised a number of auction houses on all aspects of Japanese Art.

The Japanese Art Market

From the end of World War II until the early 1990s, Western and Asian collectors drove demand for screens, hanging scrolls, prints and ceramics made between the fifth and the 19th centuries. Then came Japan's 1990 economic crisis. The sudden exit of Japanese speculators declined art prices worldwide. In the specialist area of Japanese art, both Western and Japanese buyers pulled back. As the crash receded into the past, prices stabilized and then rose steadily without the fear of speculative pressures. The finest Japanese art infrequently costs more than $1,000,000. This is a field devoid of glamour and hype. Rather, collectors are attracted to the sheer beauty and exquisite execution of Japanese artists. At a recent Christie's sale in New York, a pair of six-panel screens, attributed to Kano Naizen, was sold for $4,786,500 and in 2010 a Chrisitie's auction fetched $146,500 for a pair of vases from the Meiji period (circa 1900).

Determining the Value of Japanese Art

If you would like to get a Japanese art appraisal from our online specialist there are various factors that have to be take into consideration. For instance, the age and the condition of the piece, the material and the approximate height as well as the rarity of the object’s shape. They don't necessarily reflect the age of the piece, as later copies often pay tribute to previous dynasties and artists.
