Our Islamic Art Expert

Our Islamic art expert was brought up and educated in Luxemburg. After spending her gap year in Florence, she completed her degree in History of Art at the University of East Anglia and at the Sorbonne, where she studied Islamic architecture. She spent a number of years as the assistant to a prominent dealer in Ottoman art in London, before joining the Islamic Art department at Christie’s in London. She joined Bonhams’ Islamic and Indian department, ultimately becoming head of department. She is now an independent art consultant, specialising in Islamic art.

The Market for Islamic Art

The market for Islamic art is an emerging market that is beginning to realize it’s great potential. The Islamic art market has seen record breaking sales recently with the highlight being Sotheby’s $40.4 million gross at the October 2010 Islamic art sale in London, the highest gross for a sale in this market. Edward Gibbs, Sotheby’s Middle East department head, stated that, “these exceptional results reflect the strong demand for rare and high quality works of art with good provenance, and the growing strength of this field on the international art scene.”
Some highlights from Islamic art sales include the Nasrid Ear-Dagger sold at Sotheby’s in October 2010 for $5,895,740 and the Umayyad Cordoba, a 10th century bronze fountainhead which sold at Christie’s in April 1997 for $5,947,460, being a world record price for Islamic art at auction at the time. The market for Islamic art is vast due to the wide range of media and materials used and one can see large price tags put on an array of objects from rugs to vases and anything in between.
