Antiquities at Auction

Ever since the 18th Century Grand Tour and before, antiquities have played an important part in the world of collecting and selling art. Antiquities auctions take place across the globe in cities such as New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Dubai and many others. Some of the greatest auction highlights include a limestone Egyptian sculpture, dating back to 2465 – 2323 BC that was sold at Christies New York in 2005 for a grand total of $2.8 million. The sale of the Jenkins Venus in 2002 for $11.6 million at Christies as well still stands the test of time as one of the most exquisite examples of Greek marble sculpture to ever come to market. More recently, in 2011, Bonhams sold for $422,000 a Mesopotamian Terracotta cuneiform cylinder seal dating to 604-562 BC breaking the record for any cylinder seal ever sold at auction. With Christies holding four auctions a year, as well as, Sotheby’s and Bonhams holding two, there are many opportunities to buy, sell, and see great antiquity pieces.

What an Expert Looks For

The most important things to always consider are condition, subject, and period. When dealing with modern pieces, condition is paramount. With an object that is hundreds, even thousands of years old, perfect condition will be almost impossible to come by! Pieces that are in a relatively good condition with little damage will fetch higher prices than those pieces with large visible cracks and holes.
Another factor our experts look at when deciding the value of a piece, is its subject matter. Things that are more appealing to collectors usually are items that are more rare and hard to come by. A decorated bowl for example would fetch a lower price than that of a marble statue due to the amount of ancient daily objects available at auction.
And finally, all collectors and experts are always mindful of the period or date of the piece. A Cycladic figurine dating anywhere from 3200-1100 BC will generate higher prices than a similar sized statue from the Roman Republic period with a date of around 500 BC – 100 AD due to the rare nature of older pieces.
