Value of Wine meeting Contemporary Art at Bonhams
June 29, 2011
On July 7th, Bonhams will hold their Fine Wine Sale in London. The sale includes a collection of 59 bottles of Chateau Mouton Rothschild all having individual estimates between £40,000-50,000. Instead of being traditional wine bottles with the vineyard labels on them, these bottles consist of special labels designed by contemporary artists spanning from 1945-2005.
Starting in 1945, Baron Philippe de Rothschild started commissioning Contemporary artists of that year to create a graphic design that could be manipulated into a wine label. With only a few requests such as using the vine and the ram symbol for the Chateau, artists had complete freedom.
Some designs include: 1955 George Braques, 1958 Salvador Dali, 1964 Henry Moore, 1970 Marc Chagal, 1973 Picasso, 1990 Francis Bacon and many other internationally known contemporary artists of their day.
